Abstract

Social media has become an important and prevalent part of people’s lives, as billions of people use social networks every day. But this has given rise to concerns regarding security, privacy, censorship, and management issues. The current social networks are centralized, which allows the big companies to observe and track the activities and behaviours of their user base. These big companies tend to use data for third parties, keeping huge profits without users’ permission. Involvement in blockchain technology has started to challenge this status quo and push for better privacy and security standards. Distributed social networks can help solve these privacy issues, but they have yet to reach mainstream adoption. This paper researches blockchain technology and proposes a social network built using the same to take advantage of both traditional and decentralized social networks. The interplanetary file system (IPFS) is a distributed storage system to reduce backend operation costs and increase data availability.
