Sustainable development is an urgent global challenge that requires innovative solutions to address complex socio-environmental challenges while ensuring the well-being of current and future generations. Mathematical modelling has evolved into an indispensable tool, providing valuable insights for comprehending, evaluating, and enhancing systems across diverse domains. By harnessing the power of mathematical modelling, we can support the transformative changes needed to build a sustainable future. In this paper, I examine the role of mathematical modelling in achieving the sustainable development goals and highlight its potential to provide insights, guide decisions and promote a more resilient and just world. We discuss the key elements of sustainability and show how mathematical modeling can help to achieve these goals. Mathematical modelling plays a pivotal role in addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with sustainable development.
