Optimization of Pitched Roof Steel Trusses for Different Conditions by uses of EXCELL and STADD Programming

Abstract

Present study analyse the different trusses of pitched roofwith different shapes and different spans under similar loading conditions. Four type trusses namely, Pratt, Howe, Fan and Fink trusses with spans equals to 8 m, 10 m, 12 m, 14 m, 16 m and 18 m were considered. The different trusses are analysed and designed by EXCELL and STAAD programming for similar loading conditions. Output file of STAAD software used in preparation of tables and graphs of results to obtain the most efficient and economical truss for different spans. The results of analysis and design are observed to optimize the suitability of truss on the basis of required weight of truss, maximum joint displacements, maximum member axial force and maximum support reaction under similar span and loading conditions. The overall results shows that the use of Pratt or Fan type trusses for span range from 8 m to 18 m is most economical and efficient.
